I disagree. It is definitely a test; but it's less about assessment of interest and more about power and control. The woman is trying to see if the man is willing to fawn over her. What happens if he doesn't?

The authors are in denial. What would a woman feel if you refused to play, and instead made fun of her? Women are attracted to men who can be 'real men' and are in control of their own lives. Men who surrender all power at the first opportunity will find themselves eventually left in a ditch when a man comes along who is self-confident enough not to worship the ground attractive women walk on. It's a familiar pattern- the nice guy gets ditched for the outlaw biker.

Even if a woman is just fishing for compliments by saying "I'm not pretty enough," don't advise guys to throw her a corny hyperbolic lie. "You're the hottest girl in town" is going to paint the complimenter as an untrustworthy pushover. "I'm so lucky to get a date with you" plants the seedling of an idea that you aren't good enough for her.

If you are really suggesting that dudes give women compliments when ladies are fishing for them, a toned-down compliment is much more likely to be taken seriously (as in, not seen as a sarcastic insult, as well as seen as sincere) if you say something like "Please, you have nothing to be worried about. You are gorgeous."

This only applies to women who are fishing for compliments about their beauty. If someone says "I'm not smart enough" and you tell her that she's brilliant or she's the "smartest girl you know", it's going to sound like you're making fun of her no matter what.

Either one of two things:

1) She's insecure.
2) She's fishing for compliments.

Either way, tell her "You need some self-confidence." I have seen only about 12 TRULY ugly girls in my lifetime; odds are you're fine and you either need to suck it up and like yourself or get a life, if your fishing for compliments. Truly beautiful people don't NEED to fish.

I think it really depends on if the girl is pretty or not. If the girl is really hot then she is most like fishing for compliments ( however there are some girls that are really hot and really do think they are ugly so you will have to assess the way she is saying it to find out if she is serious or not). If she is fairly hot to average then she probably does wish she was prettier or thinks she is ugly. Girls compare themselves to the most beautiful girls they see and if they don't match up then they think they are ugly. In this situation I would use the SHOCK and AWE. I fall into the second catagory and I would totally think that was sweet and exactly what I needed to hear. If they really are ugly I don't know what to tell you :)

Normally this is saidin a different way, when you tell a girl what you think about her, example GOD UR SEXY or something along those lines they normally answer with a NO IM NOT or a TUT SHUUUUU NO IM NOT *flutters eyelashes* if they answer a straight NO IM NOT reassure them by saying WELL I KNOW YOU ARE. and if she answers with a TUT SHUUUH NO IM NOT *FLUTTERS EYELASHES* she is fishin for comments dont give them to her just say IF YOU SAY SO and leave it at that
